Congratulations to Paul and the cast of Aladdin

The Stage reports: -

Paul Hammond deserves an award for this production of Aladdin, based on the original script of the story from 1865. In my dozen or so years of reviewing pantomimes, there has never been anything quite as impressive, along with the fact that the performances are of the highest quality.

Rob Forknall as Widow Twankey and Mark Wingett as Abanazar lead the way, along with Alex Winters and Ben Jennings as Wishee Washee and Kassim, with shades of Ant and Dec. Sam Attwater as Aladdin and Clara Beauchamp as Princess Jasmine (understudy for Poppy Jhakra) perform a couple of excellent duets, which leads me to the biggest improvement in the Pavilion pantomime this year - a seven-piece band hidden in the pit. What a difference that makes from the over-amplified backing tapes of the past. There is a good mix of music, from rock and roll to swing, designed to appeal to all ages.

One of the many highlights of this show is the astonishing Duo Du Cirque with Nikki Crockett suspended on two pieces of silk high above the stage. High praise too for choreographer Emma Rogers - the dance routines are superb and no expense has been spared on the costumes.

I have photographed the dress rehearsals of many Pantos on the South Coast. When I saw Aladdin through my camera lens I knew this was something special.

If you want to see or produce a fantastic pantomime, this is the one, it is the master class of modern panto.

Oak Grove College had theatrical glamour mixed with a touch of Hollywood when cast members of the current Worthing Pantomimes, Snow White and Aladdin, together with a full film crew descended on their drama room.

The children were doing their part in filming the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ to raise funds, local awareness of the college and most importantly, to have a great time making a film. The whole event was the brainchild of Glen Harris and David Dowling of South Coast Productions who usually make promotional videos.

The children were already excited at the prospect of being on film but when the Mayor of Worthing and her husband joined them, it was obvious that it was going to be more than just singing a carol.

After a practice run, there was a knock at the door and every head turned to see Snow White, Prince Charming and Muddles from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (on at the Connaught Theatre until 31st Dec 2010), followed closely by Inspector Ping Pong, Speciality Act - Duo Du Cirque and three girls of the Harem from Aladdin (on at the Pavilion Theatre until 2nd January 2011). The atmosphere was now electric.

Only sixteen days separated the initial idea from the final filming session and credit must go to the children and teachers who did a truly fantastic job of learning the carol, despite losing half of their rehearsals due to the snow. Supported by the professional singers, the children sang their hearts out, producing a performance worthy of any of the town’s theatres.

The performers spent a lot of time having their photographs taken with the children and then signed the prints for them to take away as a cherished momento. Gasps and cheers filled the school as the Duo Du Cirque gave an impromptu performance in the atrium, drawing a crowd of amazed children and teachers.

Sixteen hundred pounds in sixteen days has been an enormous milestone for South Coast Productions’ first attempt at serious fundraising but it is hoped that the final total will rise much higher.

Local businesses from thebestof Worthing group have paid to appear in a parody version of the carol which is now spreading rapidly around business websites, YouTube and Facebook.

Donations are still needed and can be made via South Coast Productions or directly to Sharon Kettlewell at Oak Grove College.
